That's exactly what he's doing, the piece was for SDCC souvenir book and the theme was "the year comics grew up" Most people miss that detail though

It's an interesting concept. Batman going from the lighter version into the darker more modern version. Very cool. But I do still enjoy the Adam West light-hearted Batman of the 60's and 50's.

A lot of people do, I think that's evident from this Batman 66' book which is a great idea on offering different takes for the character.
